2020 will undeniably be a year to remember, with COVID-19 being the biggest talking point followed by this year’s elections. We cautiously, but optimistically update you on a significant turning point in the fight against the Coronavirus. Thanks to science and medical research, the United Kingdom has granted emergency widespread use of the first vaccines. The American Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to do the same soon. This is truly a critical juncture that has the world collectively wondering, is this the beginning of the end?
Specifically, in the State of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo says residents should expect to receive its first allocation of COVID-19 vaccines from the federal government by December 15th. Should all safety and efficiency approvals be granted, doses of the vaccine will be available to 170,000 New Yorkers out of the total state population of 19, 440,500; with 480,000 doses expected to be received by early January 2021. The vaccines are being manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and Moderna Therapeutics both of whom are awaiting final FDA approvals. Once approved, New York is expected to receive half of their shipment from Pfizer and the other half from Moderna.
Under the current plan, which is subject to federal and state guidance, the vaccine doses will be rolled out in phases. The first phase will focus on vaccinating essential workers and seniors. Hence, priority will initially go to “high risk” healthcare workers and those working and living in nursing homes. The general public will not be expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for several months.
The nation’s expert on infectious disease, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has predicted back in March of 2020 that the only way to stop the spreading of the virus would be through the development of a vaccine. Thus, this news has been anxiously awaited. As the virus continues to spread across the country and our beloved state, we are sharing tips with you on staying safe during this critical time which includes:
- If you are sick – STAY HOME. Call your healthcare provider before going to a medical care center or hospital.
- Continue to social distance by staying six feet away from others, especially if you are over the age of 65 or have a pre-existing condition.
- Continue to wear cloth face coverings in public especially when using UBER, LYFT, mass transit, dining at restaurants, going to supermarkets, post office, and any place social distancing might be challenging. Face covering is most essential when social distancing is difficult!
- Wash your hands at least 20 seconds in warm water as frequently as possible, particularly after being in public places, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not readily available.
- Now that the holidays are upon us, follow guidelines for your area when it comes to large gatherings. Avoid crowds and mass gatherings.
